Energy Capital of the U.S. Sparks New Book

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Local author Mary Kelley and Arcadia Publishing present Gillette, the newest addition to the popular Images of America Series. Boasting over 200 vintage images, Gillette showcases the pioneer settlers in this early cow town and chronicles its growth into the Energy Capital of the United States.

The community, originally known as Donkey Town, was a temporary base camp for the survey crews from the Burlington and Missouri Railroad, who were planning to build a line through northeastern Wyoming in the late 1880s. Engineer and surveyor Edward Gillette, a New Haven native, was in charge of surveying the area that would ultimately be named after him.

Mary hopes that the readers of Gillette will enjoy the memories conjured up by the photographs and value the legacy that others left behind.

A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Campbell County Rockpile Museum.

Highlights of Gillette:

  • Features the Wyodak Mine, the longest continuously operating surface mine in the nation
  • Showcases Gillette’s colorful characters including cowboys named Holdout Johnson, Every Day Johnson, Lame Smithy, Long Shorty, Bum-a-Nickle Garrett and Coyote Bill
  • Depicts the arrest of former Mayor Roy Montgomery who was convicted of running a house of ill-repute in the early 1900s

Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com or (888)-313-2665.

Noland Peacock for Sheriff

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

My name is Noland Peacock and I am running for Sheriff of Campbell County Wyoming. Many people know that I have worked for the City of Gillette Police department since 1977. I have been asked why, after a successful 32 year career with the Gillette Police department, do I now want to be the Sheriff of Campbell County. For me the answer is simple. Law Enforcement is my chosen profession, my passion and for the last 32 years I have served the citizens of Campbell County and would like the opportunity to continue to serve the citizens of this county.

I believe my education, training, experience and the leadership opportunities I have had, makes me the best candidate to the Sheriff’s position. With my strong leadership, I know I can improve the overall organization and operations of the Sheriff’s department and more importantly the service it provides to the citizens of Campbell County.

Currently with at least 5 candidates seeking this position there will be a lot of talk about why each candidate is the best. Some candidates have good educational backgrounds, some have years of Law Enforcement experience and all will have many hours of law enforcement related training. But I ask that you look past all of the political hype, the large bill boards and signs and truly evaluate the total credentials of each candidate to determine who has the most leadership, knowledge, qualifications and experience for this position. And more importantly look at what they have accomplished in their careers to determine who would be the best candidate to serve Campbell County.

After you have done this I believe you will find that I am the candidate who has the best leadership abilities, knowledge and experience to move the Sheriff’s department forward.
