Water, electric rates go up

Gillette residents soon will be paying more for their water and electric bills, as the city tries to bridge the gap between what the utilities cost to provide and what people are paying for them.

City officials proposed yearly rate increases for both services that will cost residents somewhere between $7 and $13 more a month over the next three years.

- I personally am not too worried about this… Moving here from Rapid City, I was so blessed by the low utilities we have in Gillette. I would say my utility bills here are about half of what they were. So this change does not even phase me.

Obama Visits Iraq

President Barack Obama made an unannounced trip to Iraq on Tuesday, his first visit as commander-in-chief.

Reiterating his pledge to ending the war, he told a cheering crowd of American troops that it was time for Iraqis “to take responsibility for their country and for their sovereignty.”

“You have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country. That is an extraordinary achievement,” Obama told some 600 troops.

Obama also met with top U.S. commanders as well as senior Iraqi leaders on the visit, which lasted a little more than four hours.

North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch Sunday that the U.S., Japan and other nations suspect was a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology.

Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean and U.S. governments said. The multistage rocket hurtled toward the Pacific, reaching Japanese airspace within seven minutes, but no debris appeared to hit its territory, officials in Tokyo said.

A new edition of the Economic Analysis Division’s Wyoming Economic Summary is now available. This quarterly publication highlights the State’s economic conditions. The economic indicators that are discussed and graphically illustrated include employment by industry, income and earnings, housing, taxable sales, tourism, agriculture, and revenue.
