Obama Visits Iraq

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

President Barack Obama made an unannounced trip to Iraq on Tuesday, his first visit as commander-in-chief.

“You have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country. That is an extraordinary achievement,” Obama told some 600 troops.

Obama also met with top U.S. commanders as well as senior Iraqi leaders on the visit, which lasted a little more than four hours.

Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean and U.S. governments said. The multistage rocket hurtled toward the Pacific, reaching Japanese airspace within seven minutes, but no debris appeared to hit its territory, officials in Tokyo said.
