Question Think before you act….Is it worth it?

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Two years ago I posted this comment on a forum I visit. After all the conversation that has taken place here and on the News-Records guestbook, it seemed appropriate to share my thoughts with the Gillette community.

Take the time when you are driving, making a phone call, at work interacting with your fellow employees or the public, to decide if someone “does you wrong” what ever it may be, is your reaction worth the consequences to the rest of your life?

I’m talking about the little things that happen to us everyday. Someone cuts you off while you are driving; you have to call the phone company about your bill and the person you talk to is rude; someone at work pours the last cup of coffee and doesn’t make another pot; the lady you waited on at work was rude and mean to you. Before you chose to react and let it ruin your day/life ask yourself a simple question:

How does this affect the rest of my life?

Really! How is it going to affect the well being and quality of the rest of your life? If you are currently stewing about something that happened recently you can still ask yourself the question then let it go! It isn’t that important! It isn’t going to change the rest of your life.

Yesterday I was passed by a car at a high rate of speed in town, who then changed lanes in front of me then turned in front of me. It wasn’t anything close and I wondered what the hurry was. The man in the car was tailgating a van in front of him and the van turned off on a side street. The man in the car slammed on his brakes, threw the car into park and jumped out screaming obscentities, shaking his fist and pointing his finger at the driver of the van. The driver of the van backed up opened his door and proceeded to start screaming back. I was honesty in fear of what this could escalate to. I believe if either party had a gun, I would have witnessed a shooting.

After the guy in the car decided to leave, I headed on my way home and wondered to myself, what could possible have happened to provoke the events I had just witnessed. I’m sure it had to do with driving and it was like having cold water thrown into my face. I get very frustrated and vocal when I’m driving. Witnessing this formed the question in my head. One I have vowed to place in my mind at all times in the future.

How does this affect the rest of my life?

The answer 99.999 (infinity) is IT WON’T. Rude drivers, clerks, workers, customers, can’t do anything to affect the big picture of my life.

I wanted to ask all of you who read this to make this question part of your lives as well. We all need to chill out and settle down. Don’t let the little stuff ruin your day, week, month, year, whatever. We are called to be examples of Christ, and can you imagine Him shaking His fist and cussing someone out because they took His parking place?????

At the Starbucks Drive Thru

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Hi people. I just wanted to say how impressed I was the other day at the Starbucks drive thru. I pulled ahead to the window to pay for my coffee and the lady in front of me had already paid for my bill. I was so impressed. I don’t think I’ve ever had this happen before. It made me feel pretty good. There are a lot of good people here in this town and that was just one small example. It sure changed my thinking that day and now every time I go thru Starbucks I just want to pay for the next person’s bill. And I do if I have the extra money. It really gives me a good feeling inside plus it makes that person feel good and it changes their attitude. If we could all follow the example of this one person we could really make a difference. It’s kind of like that movie “Pay It Forward”. Thank you to the lady who paid for my coffee. Your kindness will not be forgotten.

Renting a home in Gillette, WY

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

Hi everyone. I just wanted to post a quick note about the price of rent here in Gillette. If you are from Gillette or are new here, then you know exactly what I’m about to say. The cost of renting a home, apartment, mobile home or even a camper here is very high! I just wanted to warn those who are about to move here to get your ducks in a row first before you come. Make for sure that you have a place to live before you just come out here. A run down older mobile home often rents for as much as $1,200 to $1,500 a month. Sometimes you can get a deal for $600 to $800 a month, but very rarely. Apartments usually go for $750 on up. And there is usually a list of people waiting to get in just about everywhere. I would say the average rent price is definitely around $1,200 to $1,400 a month. Now if you are a landlord – this is great! Now is definitely a great time to have rental properties here. Even with the small decline in home sales, the demand for rental homes is still just as high as it ever was. This is according to some property managers that I have recently talked to. The rental market is very strong and if you’re looking for a place to invest in rental properties, then this is definitely it. If you can get into the right types of properties at the right price of course. Good luck to all of you new people trying to move here from out of state. I would strongly recommend talking to all of the rental agencies before making a decision. Here is a pretty good list for you to get your start: http://www.gillette-realestate.com/apartmentrentals.htm

This is a list that I compiled for all the newbies moving in so it will make your job a little easier when searching for an apartment. There are even some pictures of the major apartment complexes on this page. If you are a landlord and would like to post your place for rent, then you can do it for free here on the Gillette WY Real Estate Portal: http://gillette-realestate.com/classifieds/index.php

Agents and homeowners can also list their homes for sale for free too.

Gillette Economy and Housing Prices

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

As you may well know, at this same time last year there were only about 70 to 100 homes up for sale on the Gillette Market. That was the trend for most of the summer months and into fall. Now we have around 400 homes on the market and it has been this way most of the summer. What is causing this? Some say it is all the new builders and new homes coming on the market. People are putting up their homes for sale because their new home is almost built. Also, there may be a lot of people that saw the high prices of homes last year and still think that they can get that level of inflation for theirs which has caused a flood of homes to come onto the market. Another reason is that there is always that crowd of people who are leaving town and moving away. Right now home prices and selection is actually at its most favorable point – in my opinion. We are seeing $10,000 to $20,000 price reductions. Sellers are now willing to pay closing costs too. And this is happening on median priced homes, not just the larger $350,000 to $500,000 homes. So if you want to buy a home in Gillette, now is the perfect timing. DON’T WAIT TOO LONG!!!! This won’t last. I think the window of opportunity to negotiate a good deal is only going to last a few more months at best. Maybe 4 to 6 months. With talks of another coal mine and all of the projecions of new business coming down the pipe, we are looking at around 400 jobs opening up in the very near future. Gillette will see another surge of people coming in looking for good paying jobs and for fair priced housing.

Please feel free to leave your comments or opinions. The Gillette Wyoming Blog is open to everyone in the public or media. Thanks for stopping by.
