What is your pet peeve?
Just like a lot of people here in Gillette, I have a few pet peeves. There are many things I like about this town, but I’m not alone when I say my biggest pet peeve here is the traffic and all the crazy drivers on the road. Everyone drives so fast and they are in such a hurry to get somewhere. THE thing I hate the most… Here it is… When you are getting ready to merge over into a turning lane and there is already someone behind you trying to get into the same turning lane and practically passing you before you even get a chance. You have to start signaling and pulling over into your turning lane well before you even get there or some freak is trying to pass you on the inside! And then they get mad at you when you decide to get into the turning lane at the proper time. It just erks me! Come on people. Have and show a little courtesy on the road. Another problem I have is the speeding traffic and all the loud tail pipes on the residential neighborhood streets. I have small children that I’m afraid to let out of the house because of all the people racing down my street. It scares me. What is your pet peeve?

I agree totally..
Boxelder and Hwy 59….The hub of stupid drivers central…aaarrrgh!!!!!!!!!! Need I say more????
Ummm…. Yeah. You need not say any more.
I agree also. It seems these days that every street is a racetrack and every stoplight is a finish line. My personal favorite drivers are they ones who try to get home 1/10th of a second faster by tailgating you for miles then just before their turn they zoom around you kicking up the rocks, then cut you off to make their right hand turn.
I have to agree that the traffic here is getting worse with all the people moving here. I think the problem is is that Gillette wasn’t prepared for a population explosion. The traffic here in town isn’t nearly as bad as Fresno, Ca which is where I come from. I moved here about 6 1/2 years ago and thought and still think that the traffic problem isn’t all that bad. I have seen this town grow though and I do see that the traffic problem is getting worse. But please believe me when I say it could be a lot worse…In Fresno, more than 75% of the drivers out there ARE NOT insured. So if you are involved in an accident, then chances are you will be responsible for the damages. I’m not saying that these kids racing mom and dad’s high priced vehicles are not held accountable, which they should be (in fact, I think that the parents should be held accountable for their kids’ actions), I just don’t think that the traffic problem here in Gillette is as bad as some people say it is.
If people in this town would just DRIVE we wouldn’t have everyone being so rude. DO NOT drive 25mph in a 35 zone and especially by the jail, WHY do people going forward towards the south on 4-J have to be in the right lane. EVERY NIGHT there is no one in the center lane but stupid drivers feel the need to be in the right lane to hold up the whole line of people who just want to TURN RIGHT! Also, people need to stop sitting for 5 seconds at the green light, that’s why everyone runs the red lights because stupid people at the front of the line can’t get their POS moving in a reasonable fashion!!!!!
My current Pet Peeve is that there are not many people on this blog to tell me what Gillette is like!!
That will change soon.. Nice to have you here though BigSky!
Bad drivers and Rude people!
Regarding driving habits, maybe people sit for a few seconds at a green light to look both ways before proceeding, for those many drivers who are running the red lights.
There have been at least half a dozen times where if I had gone out as soon as the light turned green, I would have been plowed into by another vehicle or flattened by a large semi hauling a big load, if I hadn’t of taken the time to look both ways first.
For those who want to know what Gillette is like, here’s my take on it:
Gillette cons: a large number of rude, impatient people in a big hurry, limited shopping, I end up buying a lot of things online. There’s a lot of wind at times, dust, especially with all the building and activity, few trees, some of the streets are in pretty poor shape and not many alternative routes to get around town, especially during busy times of the day. Housing prices right now are way inflated for what you’re getting.
Gillette pros: despite traffic issues, not a big city, always a plus IMO. While there is a lot of rude people, there are also a lot of friendly, helpful capable folk as well. Neat areas nearby to visit such as the Bighorn Mts, Black Hills.
It’s always fun to complain about wind, dirt, and lack of trees. Hello! Complain to God. NotANewcomer, sounds like you just like to complain. The roads suck, but the City has a plan (and there is not a lot of employees there right now) to get roads widened and fix the streets. You talk about impatient people, and listen to you! Chill out, and be a little more patient, try to bare with the rest of us. And if your not a new comer then you should know that there has been lots of efforts to make alternative routes. I’m so sick of listening to people complain about Gillette.
onlymyopinion… as per your name, it was only MY opinion. I am entitled to it as your are to yours. I like a good discussion regarding local issues.
Someone asked about Gillette, there’s good and bad. I mentioned both. Did you not see that part? It’s called being objective. Are you saying there is no wind, no dust, no traffic/road problems? Maybe these things bother some people, maybe not. But if someone wants to know what its like here, I think those things should be mentioned.
Oh, and thanks for illustrating my point about rude people. Sounds someone needs to take their own advice regarding chilling out. LOL
Oh, and BTW what good is a topic called “Pet Peeves” if there’s isn’t some complaints? Isn’t that the point?
So getting back on topic again, I agree with the original post about the turning lane issue. Sometimes I feel like I have to get into the lane WAY ahead of the intersection, with turn signal on of course, or else I’ll get run over.
NotANewcomer: Ya, and i was just making a point that people like you, complaining about things that no one can help is MY pet peeve.Did you read my post to fast? Is that why you think i need to chill? Take it easy. Go plant a tree and burn off some of that negative energy.
If you want to know what Gillette is like, warning: Watch who you ask.
Some people are never happy, no matter where they are.
i thot pet peeves were complaints. lol!
i like the pros and cons about gillette. i like to hear what other people have to say. Least i know i’m not the only one who feels this way. That’s good to know!
My biggest pet peeve would be all these macho retards with mullets still living in 1987 driving around in big noisy trucks with “no fear” or some such sticker adorning their cracked rear window.
People, this is 2007. Get it together.
By the way, I live overseas but am originally from Gillette.
All things considered, Gillette really is a great place to live.
Oh, and if you think you’ve met rude people in Gillette, i’d suggest you take a trip to Europe for some real perspective.
Dude.. that is funny.. regarding the mullet heads! I’m definitely laughing with you on that one.
I’m not orginally from Gillette though have lived here since I was about 19. I have real perspective having lived in different states and many different towns. Gillette didn’t used to be like this. When I first moved here I thought it was an ok town not what I was used to but I would adjust and adjust I did. I’m still not too keen on the thought of having to drive two hours to get to a mall or to a store that Gillette doesn’t have but for the most part, I make the best of it. I don’t care for the rudeness of this town now. It seems that with all the people moving in it’s getting worse. Maybe it’s because when you try to drive somewhere the road is backed up, maybe it’s the shortage of the workers in the stores that is causing the rudeness, or the poor service in restaurants, I really don’t know. But that is my opinion something I’m allowed to have just like everyone else has theirs.
I’ve totally been forgetting to put down one of MY WORST PEEVES. This has been bothering me for some time now and I can’t believe I forget to mention it. Ok.. Here it is. There are quite a few loud trucks and tailpipes in this town. Granted we are living in Gillette. But what really annoys me is that there are several of those Dodge Cummins Diesel pickups with those high-rise exhaust pipes that leave a trail of black smoke for about a block when they take off from a stop light. And every time they take off, they just have to floor it – making this loud bellowing noise and leaving a trail of smoke that can’t even be legal! People gotta be choking on it for at least a half a city block. You all know these people and have been behind one of them a time or two. One guy in particualar does it all the time just because he thinks it’s cool. I do not think it’s very cool and have thought about turning him in a time or two for this but I’m not sure what can be done about it. Any suggestions?
Admin- Shouldn’t they ban that horrible exhaust before they ban smoking?! I agree totally. And whenever i’m about to drive through the cloud of pollution i have to roll up my window and hold my breath. That could probably cause an accident. Good one, Cummins and all you other Hillbillies with black exhaust!
I think that some of the reason sales clerks and workers are rude is because customers are rude. Oh yes I have heard them cussing and screaming at clerks. I work at a liquor store here in town and some of the people that come in there are flat rude. They yak on their cell phones and try to carry on a conversation with you and their caller. They get mad because we don’t wait on them hand and foot. Worst of all we get kids in that call us names when we refuse to sell to them because they are underage. If you can’t act like a decent human being don’t expect to be treated like one.
Mullets! LMAO
Hi, my name is disman-kl, i like your site and i ll be back
I felt like I needed to tell people why I created this category on the blog. It was after reading the Gillette News Record’s Guest Book that the idea came to me. The guestbook has a very high percentage of negative comments. I know people like to vent and complain so I just decided to give them a place to do it. I just didn’t want it to be the “theme” of this blog and ruin the whole idea of having a community forum. This blog/forum is still in the developmental stages and growing rapidly. Any suggestions for new Topics is highly welcomed. To see what I’m talking about in regards to the News Record’s Guest Book go here: http://gillettenewsrecord.com/guestbook/
Just found this site through The News-Record’s site. Great idea by the way!
My pet peeve is the same as a lot of people’s I think. Traffic. I loved Ds’ comment way up there about the people that tailgate only to arrive in their driveway 10 seconds ahead of you. This happens to me every single night. I live in Sleepy Hollow and get followed closely all the way down Union Chapel, down the hill (even when it is slick) and when I am passed, they never get home any faster than I do, so what is the big hurry? I get passed when I am doing the speed limit by a) people who fly by me doing almost twice as fast as I am b) law enforcement with no lights or sirens (yes it’s true)
Also, my other favorite corner is when I have a green arrow to turn left onto Lakeway, only to have someone from the other direction ignore their red completely and turn right onto Lakeway, then immediately cut across the lane I am turning into. This happens fairly often, and I am always on the defensive because I am scared I am going to one day be run off the road or t-boned.
I couldn’t say who is to blame. The congestion doesn’t help and the new and improved roads that are badly needed are slowly beginning to appear, but mainly I wonder how these people (a majority of those on the road) get/keep a license!
Anyways, I try to live by the golden rule when it comes to driving. I think that maybe that person I am frustrated with has a family that wants to see them arrive home safely. I know I do, and try to keep that in mind when driving – that there are human lives at stake whenever you get behind the wheel. A few extra seconds or minutes of waiting mean so little if it saves you a lifetime of loss.
Overall Gillette is not such a bad place. It may sometimes be dirty, inconvenient and rude, but every place has it’s faults. In a larger city you trade convenience for crowds. There are rude people everywhere. And yes it is dirty & cold here but at least we don’t have an abundance of natural disasters such as fires, mudslides, earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, etc. Gillette is FAR from perfect, but perfect doesn’t exist
Here’s my pet peeve: I hate it when you’re in a resteraunt and people blow their nose or cough their flem into their napkin. There is nothing worse than biting into a sandwich and having the person at the table next to you blowing their nose or even coughing flem into a napkin. I for one always go into the restroom or even outside before i blow my nose.
i seen my first mullet! lol! that’s actually not my pet peeve..i just thot that was kinda funny after someone said something about “mullets.”
WELL garnet 27..You are by law allowed to make a right on red even if you have the green arrow, you and the other driver are not how ever allowed to take both lanes when you make the turn you have to stay in your own lane,if they hit you they will be at fault. But let’s change gears, Who want’s to talk about POTHOLES….. Let it rippppp…..
AND LET’S GIVE DETAILS AS TO (WHERE THE POTHOLES ARE)?????
ok, i’ll start since no one else has on the pothole thing…so far where i live they have FINALLY fixed them. But there is a new one down over by the Dollar store..ohhh and have they fixed the one over at Kmart yet? That sucker is HUGE!!!! Someone keeps taking the cone out of it..I feel bad for the person who actually hits it not knowing it’s there.
Yes Bubba, you are allowed to make a right on red even if the other driver has a green arrow. However, you must STOP first, yield, then go. Not blast through a red as if it were a green, bypass the near AND far lane and go immediately into the turning lane, while the person with the green arrow is turning into the near lane (which is the law), thereby cutting off “green arrow” driver who has the right-of-way. It’s not a matter of who’s at fault, I’d rather not be hit at all, especially when my daughter is in her child seat on the side of the car that would be hit in that situation.
We are thinking of coming out in the next 4 weeks and wanted to know what the job market is like. Driver positions for the gas companies, mines etc??? Can we get by with a 2 wheel drive???
The job market is pretty good for driver positions. You should have no problems at all finding a good paying job as a driver. I would say for the most part you can get around in a 2wd. There might be just a couple days each winter that it might pose a problem.
