Things to do in Gillette
Just because everyone comes here for work does not mean that Gillette is not a fun place to play. About 1 hour to the West is the Beautiful Big Horn Mountains and about 1 hour to the East is the Keyhole State Reservoir. Both attractions boast some of the best scenery in the country and plenty of things to do! Gillette is a decent sized town around a population of about 20,000 or so (depending on the week!). We have a fair amount of shopping and eating right here in town. But if you want, Rapid City, SD or Casper, WY are to major hubs within a 2 hour drive of Gillette. Feel free to talk about what there is to do here in Gillette. If you have an idea of something fun or nice to do here, please post it!

Here are my top 5 picks for good Restaurants here in Gillette starting with my # 1 pick first:
1. Bootleggers – Italian Food
2. Boss Lodge – Fine Dining
3. Chop House – Finer Dining & Bar
4. Prime Rib – Excellent Prime Rib, Fine Dining & a great selection of Wines
5. A & W / Long John Silvers – not exactly fine dining, but in my opinion it is
the best fast food joint in town with always fresh meals, great selection
+ fast service – A+++++++++++++++++
And not on my top 5, but also in my favorites is the China Buffet. They have the best Chinese food in town in my opinion.
We always enjoyed the parks there, Concert in the Park in the Summer was fun. Gillete has done a great job with the parks there.
Kids loved the sports the Rec had to offer too. Man I do miss Gillette.
When I first moved here about 6 1/2 years ago, I was misrable. I come from a big city in CA (about 500,000 pop) so everything there was an arms reach away. But living here for a while now, I have learned to appreciate the simple things in life. Everything and everyone here is soooooo laid back compared to what I was used to. Sure I have to drive a couple hours to Rapid City or a couple hours to Casper to get any kind of shopping done that doesn’t involve Walmart, lol. But that is easily overlooked as I have gotten used to the “laid back country life” I have experienced here in Gillette. I don’t have to install a security system in my house, I don’t have an alarm system in my vehicle, etc, etc…When I drive down HWY50 or 14-16, I see complete strangers wave to me just because I’m driving a truck, lol. I don’t see them as a threat because back in my hometown, when people wave to you, you automatically think it’s a gang sign they’re throwing up and they’re gonna shoot you. What a concept…friendly people in Wyoming…I love it! Also, I have 2 kids, ages 7 and 9. Where would you rather raise them, my hometown or here???
You make some great points afsovet! This is a good way to look at things.
does gillette still have that museum with roy roger’s horse trigger standing tall?
I think it is the Rockpile Museum that you are referring to..
I may have a job offer in Gillette. Other than being there for my interview and driving around, I could not get a real feel for the town. Looking for input, pro and con. I did like the location central to Big Horn Mountains and Black Hills. Kind of bleak locally, though.
I also like the central location here. Gillette will start to grow on you.
My favorite thing to do in Gillette, is to get on I-90 and drive to Deadwood.
I like going to Keyhole Lake to go camping or just go down to the fishing lake here in gillette and have a picnic!
Gillette also has 2 pretty nice movie theatres. I am kind of a movie fan and always enjoy watching a new flick. The website address to the Foothills Theatrs and Ski Hi Cinema is: http://gillettetheatres.com/
I just moved here and I have a 2 year old daughter and I am a stay at home mother and dont know a soul here. And just want to figure out what there is to do with children. Where I came from they had childrens museum all kinds of parks a carousel you name it they had it. And here I feel like I cant find a thing to do and I am bored out of my gourd.
Try going to the Public Library. It is pretty kid friendly.
People also forget that we have the Cam-Plex, which is located off Gardner Lake Rd and Boxelder. They always have a variety of events for all ages going on year round. The summer of 2008 the Pirotechnics show comes back to town which features some of the best fireworks displays along with synchronized music, and lasts for 5 days. For information on Cam-Plex events go to http://www.cam-plex.com
Gillette, is definitely a laid back place and a rather good one to raise kids. I do, however, wish there was more to do locally. We don’t have many things for kids to do and always having to leave town is a bummer. I wish we had more parks, activities, a zoo, etc. for the kids. Other than this, Gillette is a safe place to life.
I recently moved here from N.M. Gillette is a pretty laid back town and it has grew on me. The gyms are top notch and the food is ok. I wish we had a mall here and a decent mexican restaurant.
SteveT, I’ve alot of places across this great United States and I somehow find myself returning here. Anyway. About the Mexican Restaurant. Los Compadres is by far the best Mexican food I’ve had here. Its right over by Don’s Super Market. As for the Rest of you. I think Gillette is made solely of it the people who inhabit it. Gillette is one of the MOST nicest towns to live in for the sheer fact that everyone knows everyone and takes care of them… I think thats what makes Gillette. The people.
The people in all of Wyoming are great. I moved to Wyo from Pennsylvania for college and have never looked back. My inlaws are from another town in south central Wyo and people here know them. As a matter of fact, my neighbor’s sister was the bus driver for my hubby and his siblings. Last year that same neighbor’s son called my hubby to tell him where the elk were during hunting season. And the whole state is that kind of place, if you need help all you have to do is ask and you will get more than what you need.
That said, I love the parks in Gillette. The play equipment is outstanding and the parks are kept clean. There’s a huge variety of things to do int he parks. Some have lots of slides, some are almost all monkey bars, most of them have lots of space to run around and picnic tables. One of the parks has a fishing lake, though it isn’t huge and there aren’t really any monsters in there it’s nice for a lazy afternoon.
My husband loves to hunt and thereby loves the gun range that’s in town. Also, he likes that there are plenty of options on where to go to hunt that don’t require more than a couple hours to get to. And we both love T&T Guns and Ammo that’s just out of town on Hwy 51. It’s a family run place with EXCELLENT customer service.
The Cam-Plex is great. The library has a lot of stuff for the kids. The paper (Gillette News Record) almost always has a section for “What’s going on” in town. The new Rec Center is AMAZING. During the summer the City pool is free. Which is great.
Also a big plus if you have kids is a group on Meetup.com. It’s called Gillette Moms Meetup and they take time to put everything going on in town and near by on their calendar. They also plan special things for the kids to do like tour the fire house or the airport. And there are tons of things to get involved in.
Are you kidding me, this place is a complete dump!!!!! Hours to drive to get somewhere to do anything fun. You consider that a good thing? You are completely nuts!!! The town is filled with white trash. I feel sorry for the poor kids who are stuck in this town. Its a nuclear wasteland.
LOVE Gillette…..Even if you have to drive for a couple hours to “do anything” its a nice town! My brother has lived in Gillette for the last few years and we visit at least twice a year. We enjoy shopping at the local businesses and eating a several of the restaurants. Coming from a small town in Central Missouri, it’s like being “home” when we are in Gillette!
Why do business for sale not list a company name?
i lived in gillette wyo from january 1977 to april 1981 this was the beginning of the coal boom,at the beginning i pounded railroad spikes for neosho co at cordero mine. from 1979 to 1981 i worked at job service.i wonder if there is still anybody out there from that era.if so let me know im on faceboo under carmine lalama
i worked in gillette for about 6 months and let me tell you this place just blows! i hated everyday of being there all there is to do is visit your local wal-mart or kmart i mean i wouldnt recomend visiting that place unless you were strictly there to make money
my boyfriend lives in Gillette and wants me to move there next year, well i live in Florida and i am use to the city, theme parks, night life and i am curious if there are any good jobs there and if its worth the move, i love him and want to be with him. He is the one with the great job so i don’t want him to give it up to move to Florida? Seems like a great town though…..
My daughter’s friend is moving to Gillette with her father and now my daughter tells me she wants to join her? Trouble is the pair have one more year of high school. See, my daughter’s friend got herself involved in a bad situation and I think she’s basically running away from it. My daughter has taken on the roll of this girl’s protector-n-chief?
I’ve been telling her for years to get the hell out of the town we live in, Las Vegas, and now she’s turning that back on me as her excuse to join her friend? Maybe I should have specified get the hell out of town WHEN YOU GO TO COLLEGE?
Anyway, anybody know anything about the high schools in Gillette, I think I read that there were 3 high schools if you count the Christian school. What about the kids? I’ve been reading that there aint much to do in Gillette, it’s cold and it rains a lot?
Any info would be appreciated. Cheers, Steve.
I just moved her and I am trying to find friends any suggestions?
Ya, Gillette sucks.I have been here Five years and this place has no class. Being from Mi., where people have respect for other people, I cant seem to grasp the Idea of being a complete a** hole on a daily basis, If you have a choice, never move here, better yet, don’t even visit. For the people that live here, and want to try to say any different, just remember you don’t know anything different.

My Husband moved to Gillette from Calif. He was out of work for 2 years. Once in Gillette he found a city job in just a couple weeks! Gillette is a great place to work but as far as living there not so much. Not much to do at all unless you want to drive a hour or 2. However if you are a hermit crab it’s a great place for you. We have 1 young child that is in alot of activities in Calif that Gillette doesn’t offer. Sadly it seems our family is splitting up now, at least there is the rexplex when we go visit.
